Alexander Alexeenko - 03.03.20

The first case of infection with a new coronavirus was registered by doctors in the state of New York: the patient has visited Iran, Governor Andrew Cuomo said. Coronavirus spreads on the US East Coast. Previously reported about an infection in Massachusetts. On Sunday, the Rhode Island State Department of Health announced the first "alleged positive" case of COVID-19 infection — a man who traveled to Italy in mid-February fell ill.

"Tonight, we learned about the first positive result of COVID-19 infection in New York State. A patient, a woman under 40, contracted the virus while traveling to Iran and is currently is in isolation at home," — said Cuomo on Twitter.

The Governor added that the infected woman has symptoms of respiratory disease, but she is in the satisfactory condition. Cuomo also noted that there is no reason for "excessive concern" because the risk of spreading the disease throughout the state "remains low." Thus, the New York Times notes, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States has reached 76.

The death toll from the new coronavirus in the United States has risen to six as for March 3. Four patients have died in Washington state, Bloomberg reports citing local authorities. Previously reported about two victims of the disease. According to the agency, people were associated with a nursing home in Seattle, where a large number of people suspected of coronavirus are located. In total, at least 18 cases of the disease were recorded in Washington State, 14 are in King County and four in Snohomish County.

1. COVID-19 easy to confuse with flu: how to detect coronavirus symptoms

According to the WHO, signs of infection include fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia, multiple organ failure and even death.

The most important thing in preventing coronavirus is keeping your hands and surfaces clean. Always wash your hands before eating and have a disinfectant with you. Try not to touch your mouth, nose or eyes with unwashed hands. Being in public places, reduce contact with surfaces, handrails, handles, etc. Keep clean the devices you constantly touch: telephones, computers, remotes. Try not to eat from common packages (e. g. chips, nuts, cookies) or dishes, if other people dipped their fingers there.

Carry individual wipes around with you, covering your mouth and nose when sneezing, and be sure to dispose them. If desired, you can use a special medical mask, not forgetting to change it every two hours. If you notice any symptoms, stay home and consult your doctor. Most people with COVID-19 have fuzzy symptoms and may get better soon. However, there are more serious cases, with severe manifestations of the disease. Learn how to do everything possible so as not to get sick.

2. How to protect yourself against coronavirus?

  • Often wash your hands. Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly with a product that contains alcohol, or with soap and water. This kills viruses that you could pick up with your hands.
  • Keep the distance. Try to be at least a meter away from people who are coughing or sneezzing. When you are close to a sick person, you can inhale the virus, which spreads through coughing and sneezing, and you become ill yourself.
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. There may be a virus on your hands, so if you touch the mucous surfaces, it can enter the body and you will become ill.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or napkin when you cough and sneeze. The used napkin must be discarded immediately.
  • If you have a fever, cough, or have difficulty breathing, consult a doctor immediately. Stay home if you feel unwell. Get medical attention immediately and follow the advice of your doctors. So you will recover faster and not become a source of infection for others.

Keep up with the latest information on the virus situation in your country. This will help you in time to recognize the symptoms of the disease and contact the appropriate institution.
