Donald Trump informed the Senate Intelligence Committee of his decision to fire Michael Atkinson.

"In a state of emergency in the country, it is unacceptable for the president to again try to undermine the integrity of the intelligence community by firing another ... intelligence officer just to do his job," said Senator Mark Warner, deputy chairman of the intelligence committee.

“The work of the intelligence community has never been aimed at loyalty to one person; it is about protecting us all from those who wish to harm our country. We must all be deeply concerned about the ongoing attempts to politicize the national intelligence services. ”

In a letter to key lawmakers, Trump said he plans to fire official Michael Atkinson in 30 days, saying, "It is very important that I fully trust the appointees, the acting general inspectors."

Atkinson notified Congress of last year’s anonymous petition complaining about Trump’s pressure on Ukraine to investigate Democrat Joe Biden and his son. This complaint triggered an investigation that ultimately led to the impeachment of Trump.

Atkinson was also worried that Trump had potentially exposed himself to “serious national security and counterintelligence risks” when he put pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son on a July 25 phone call, according to the legal department of justice.

After controversial, partisan hearings, the House of Representatives, led by Democrats, voted to bring Trump to justice, but the Republican-led Senate acquitted him on charges in early February. Democrats fervently complain about Trump's dismissal of Atkinson, especially when the country is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Senate acquitted Trump in February.
