An alternative version of the legendary "The Loin King" by nature: a male baboon stole a lion cub

Alexander Alexeenko - 21.02.20

At the Kruger National Park in South Africa, a male baboon kidnapped a lion cub and then looked after him: grooming and caring.

The monkey was caught in the act by Kurt Schulz, director of Kurt Safari, who witnessed an unusual meeting. The baboon carried a lion cub in its paws, and then climbed a tree.

The rest of the primate troop did not pay attention to the presence of a lion. The kidnapper tenderly looked after kidnapped cub, as if it were his own baboon cub. The lion's cub seemed exhausted, but there was no noticeable damage on it. Schulz can’t exclude the possibility of internal damage.

Schultz says that baboons often kill young lions or leopards, but the circumstances of this meeting were different.

“I have witnessed how baboons viciously killed leopard cubs, and I heard of baboons killing a lion cub, but I've never seen such care and attention given to a lion cub in this way. Nature has its own laws and we cannot interfere." — he said.

The incident seems to be reminiscent of Disney's “Lion King,” especially when Rafiki’s character is holding little Simba. But updates show that Schultz’s pessimistic gaze may be a more accurate reflection of an unusual meeting.
